You Don't Have to be 'Good' to be an Artist

While studying abroad, I found myself drawing and painting more than ever. I have always thought of myself as a relatively creative person, but more so in performance and writing rather than painting, sketching, or drawing. I didn't find myself good at it, so I never did it....UNTILLLLL an art anthropologist came in as a guest speaker for my ethnography class. She gave us great advice and said "we all drew in elementary school. We can all do it, no one is reallyyyy bad at it if you just draw what you see" or something along those lines. For the assignment that day we were tasked with drawing people in London. I actually enjoyed it a lot, and thus began my exploration into the world of drawing!
As the semester comes to an end, I've decided to share some of my pieces from the last few months. I think it will be nice to look back and read this and reflect at the things going on inside my mind during this transformative period in my life.

Here is a sketch of a man I saw eating dinner alone.

Here is a drawing of my long distance friend Keeley and I talking while being far away.

This is a collab I did with Eva and Care when we went to Oxford for the day.

Here is another round robin drawing we did at Oxford!

This is the view of my first apartment on Hoffman Street. I drew this for my friend Hana but I think it was lost in the mail.

This is a fish drawing I drew for a nice cook named Narven aka Marigold in English (he hates his name because he thinks it is girly and his mom named him after her best friend). He ran a restaurant in Zadar and liked my sketches. He thought I was a good artist so I gave him the fish as a gift and he said he was going to buy a frame.

Drawing is such a nice outlet and way of remembering the things we see and feel in the world. I hope this inspires you to draw something today. Send me what you draw if you want to!
